TOP officials of the Indian Media Group (IMG) today met the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mr P.R. Dasmunsi, to discuss various issues related to the sector including the setting up of a Broadcast Regulatory Authority.
According to sources, the Group supported the Government's downlinking policy that makes it mandatory for foreign broadcasters to register themselves in India. The IMG felt that this would help in creating a level-playing field for both the domestic and foreign media companies.
It also urged the Ministry to step up digitisation of cable networks to address the issue of capacity constraint on the Indian cable networks. Digitisation would enable cable networks to carry more channels, they said.
Sources added that IMG representatives have also asked that the Government expedite efforts for the formation of a Broadcast Regulatory Authority.
The IMG delegation included Mr Subhash Chandra, Chairman, Zee Telefilms; Mr Aroon Purie, head of Living Media Group; Mr Markand Adhikari of Janmat, apart from senior officials from NDTV, Times Group, Bhaskar and Sahara group.
This was the delegation's first meeting with Mr Dasmunsi after he took charge of the Ministry from Mr S. Jaipal Reddy.
