Stock Markets Markets - Stock Markets Sensex rebounds; gains 212 points Our Bureau
Mumbai , Jan. 19 BROAD-BASED buying by investors fuelled the stock market with the BSE Sensex gaining 212.31 points to close at 9449.84 points. The markets, which had been moving down in a correction phase during the last few sessions, reversed that trend in Thursday's trade. The S&P CNX Nifty index rose by 2.19 per cent (61.65 points) to close at 2870.85. The Sensex had lost over 450 points since January 9 (It touched 9,689 points on January 9). Dealers said the gains made earlier in the day in other Asian equity markets had a positive impact on the domestic markets. "The correction that we were seeing had to end at some stage. There was some resilience yesterday and today, it was a smart bounce," said Mr D.D. Sharma, Head (Retail Research), Anand Rathi Securities. The advances outscored the declines by 1,983 to 531 on BSE. The BSE100 index gained by 101.08 points to end at 5002.02 points, while the broader BSE500 index ended higher by 77.96 points (2.06 per cent) to close at 3859.09 points. Higher gains were witnessed in mid-cap and small cap counters. The BSE MidCap index rose by 101.12 points (2.22 per cent) to end at 4660.47 while the BSE Small Cap closed higher by 179.42 points (2.22 per cent) at 6255.45 points.
