MindTree, Nera develop satellite handset

Our Bureau

Bangalore , March 24

MindTree Consulting has developed an advanced satellite handset in association with Norway-based Nera SatCom.

Nera SatCom is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nera, a supplier of fixed wireless and satellite communication equipment and systems.

The firm designs, develops, manufactures, and markets satellite terminals and gateways for mobile and fixed satellite communications.

Satellite phones/handsets are bulkier cousins of the mobile and are primarily used by the military and commercial airlines and in shipping.

These phones can be used in times of distress as they work on satellite signals, bypassing the GSM/CDMA networks.

The handset, Nera WorldSet, is optimised for users of Inmarsat's services both on land and at sea. It is designed to work with Nera's latest satellite terminal, the Nera WorldPro 1000.

MindTree developed major parts of the electronics, including component selection, circuit design, and board layout.

The company incorporated its patented ClearMind echo cancellation software, which helps in noise reduction, allowing the handset to be used in speaker mode. The Nera WorldSet provides Inmarsat users several features that are present in GSM and DECT phones.
