New Delhi , April 12

Airtel has partnered with seven other international mobile operators, who are part of the Bridge Mobile Alliance (BMA), to provide 78 million subscribers seamless cross-border mobile services across the Asia-Pacific region.

The partnership will enable subscribers of CSL (Hong Kong), Globe Telecom (Philippines), Maxis (Malaysia), SingTel Mobile (Singapore), SingTel Optus (Australia), Taiwan Mobile (Taiwan) and Telkomsel (Indonesia) to top up their pre-paid cards through select Airtel outlets while roaming in India.

BMA was established in 2004 and operates through a Singapore-incorporated joint venture company, Bridge Mobile Pte Ltd. The alliance has put in place designated Bridge Concierge counters at member-operators' outlets across all eight member countries, providing on-location assistance to customers should they lose their mobile phones, need roaming support or require technical help. There are currently 33 concierge counters and 145 prepaid top-up counters across eight member countries.

Airtel said for the benefit of the member operators' international roamers travelling to India, it will be increasing the number of Bridge prepaid top-up counters in India from three to 50. Airtel also has plans to extend the Bridge Concierge services in 10 cities, namely Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Pune and Goa.

Airtel is also making available its mobile content library, which comprises over 50,000 pieces of content covering popular Bollywood, cricket and Indian music content to the BMA partners.

"Airtel has the largest mobile content library in the region, especially popular content relating to Bollywood, music and cricket, which has an immense following across all the Bridge-member countries," said a press release.

BMA will invest up to $40 million over the next three years to build and establish a shared regional mobile infrastructure, and to deliver a wider suite of regional mobile services.
