Mumbai , June 7

Reliance Energy Ltd (REL) is pursuing power generation projects that will total 16,000 MW and entail an investment of Rs 60,000 crore.

The company is also aiming to develop 2,000 MW of nuclear capacity and has constituted an in-house core team for this purpose, said Mr Anil Ambani, Chairman.

He was speaking at the company's annual general meeting today.

The largest of these generation projects is the 7,480 MW (Phase I of 5,600 MW) Dadri project in Uttar Pradesh, for which 2,100 acres has been acquired, said Mr Ambani.

A 4,000 MW power project in Raigad, Maharashtra is on the anvil, for which land is in the process of being acquired.

Mega projects

Reliance Energy is participating in the ultra mega power project scheme and has submitted requests for qualification for projects at Sasan, Madhya Pradesh and Mundra, Gujarat.

In addition, it has filed expressions of interest for the ultra mega projects at Girya, Maharashtra and Tadri, Karnataka.

Preparatory work for hydel projects has commenced in Uttaranchal; the company has been short-listed for two projects totalling 1,700 MW in Arunachal Pradesh.

In Himachal Pradesh, the company is exploring possibilities and has submitted bids for four large projects, said Mr Ambani.

Rural electrification

It is participating in the rural electrification programme and has 7,220 villages in Uttar Pradesh under its fold, of which 2,500 have been electrified, he added.

In the transmission area, REL expects to sign project agreements to form a joint venture with Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) to set up transmission lines for Parbati and Koldam hydel projects in Himachal Pradesh.

REL will hold 74 per cent stake in the joint venture companies.

Western system

In addition, it is bidding to develop two Western region system-strengthening projects, in Maharashtra and Gujarat, which have been put up for competitive bidding by PGCIL, Mr Ambani said.

The company will also actively participate in State-level transmission networks and even examine options to develop networks to evacuate power from its own projects, he added.
