Second Palace on Wheels train to run from March
To launch a royal luxury train project at a cost of Rs 60 cr

New Delhi , July 5

In an effort to give a fillip to the tourism sector, the Rajasthan Government is to start two more luxury trains and has recently announced a new hotel policy to ensure that more hotels come up, the State Tourism Secretary, Mr Vinod Zutshi, said on Wednesday.

"We will be starting a second Palace on Wheels train which would operate on the same route as the existing train. The new train should start its commercial run from March next year. In addition, in order to cater to the super luxury segment, the State Government has tied up with EIH Ltd and the Indian Railways to launch a royal luxury train. The proposed project is likely to start in September 2008 and the tariff is likely to be between $950-$1,000 per person per night," said Mr Zutshi.

The total estimated cost of the royal luxury train project is Rs 60 crore. The project is to be operated in the form of a joint venture with EIH holding 67 per cent equity and both the State Government and Indian Railways holding 16.5 per cent equity.

Similarly, the second Palace onWheels is to be a joint project of the Indian Railways and the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation at an estimated capital outlay of Rs 30 crore. The train is to charge between $300 to $500 per passenger per night.

Hotel policy

Besides, the State Cabinet recently cleared the hotel policy that not only talks of creation of hotel land banks around the State but also offers a special reserve price for hotels and accommodation units that is 50 per cent of the prevalent commercial reserve price.

The policy also offers total exemption from land conversion charges and entertainment tax for not only new budget hotels but also 1,2 and 3-star hotels. The concessions, however, will be available till March 2010.

The Secretary said that a number of hotel chains including Indy1 and Radisson were keen to have hotels in the State. "At present there are about 15 hotels that are waiting for land to start their projects. The estimated investment in all the projects is about Rs 1,000 crore," said Mr Zutshi.
