To suit needs of ITES sector

The Government of Tamil Nadu is set to revise the curriculum of all arts and science colleges in the State to suit the needs of the information technology enabled services (ITES) industry, said sources who have been interacting with the Chief Minister.

A committee to implement it is likely to be formed within this year.

The revised curriculum would be based on a paper presented by Dr K. Nirmala Prasad, Principal, M.O.P. Vaishnav College, at a recent seminar organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

Revised curriculum

The revised curriculum would include modules on soft skills such as grooming of attitudes and interpersonal relations besides regular theory and practical subjects related to specific courses. Students' performance in these soft skills related modules is likely to be evaluated and marked. The revised curriculum is expected to come in force from the academic year 2007-2008.

FICCI would conduct programmes to train students in areas such as communication skills development, personal grooming and presentation, group discussions and personality development, said Mr N. Swaminaathan, panel member, Human Resources and Industrial Relations, FICCI.

At present, this training is planned for colleges located outside Chennai and nearby suburbs. FICCI has identified colleges in Tiruchengode, Tirunelveli and Tiruchi to organise these programmes in the coming months, said Mr Swaminaathan.

The Government is also likely to restructure curriculum at the school level, sources say. There will be stress on spoken English, introduction of elementary soft skills and foreign language skills for students across all classes and modules on management and analytical skills for class 12 students.

The Government is planning to enforce a common syllabus across the State schools, merging the present State board, matriculation, Anglo-Indian and Corporation syllabi sources said.
