H1 cargo traffic up at major ports

Cargo traffic at the major domestic ports witnessed 6.13 per cent increase during the first half ended September 2006, compared to the same period last year.

The country's 13 major ports handled 214.64 million tonnes of cargo during April-September 2006 against 202.22 million tonnes in April-September 2005, according to Indian Ports Association data (tentative).

Target

Overall traffic, however, was short of the Shipping Ministry's target of 227.91 million tonnes fixed for the period.
