Toonz Animation to open 7 academies

Sankar Radhakrishnan

Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 21

Toonz Animation is all set to expand its presence in the animation training market.

The company, which now operates animation schools in Thiruvananthapuram and Kolkata, is planning to start seven new animation academies over the first quarter of next year, said Mr P. Jayakumar, CEO, Toonz Animation India Pvt Ltd.

The company is currently in the process of tying up partnerships for operating the new animation schools. The academies will be set up in the metros and other large cities, he added. "We have set up a separate company for the academy business," he said. Called Asian Institute of Film and Media Studies Pvt Ltd, the company will be based in Thiruvananthapuram and is at the heart of Toonz Animation's foray into media-related education. To begin with, the new academies will offer courses in animation, he explained. Training programmes in gaming are also planned. Eventually, the plan is to expand the curriculum to include a range of media-related courses.

Finding qualified teachers for the new animation schools will be a challenge, but the company's intensive six-month trainers training programme will help overcome this challenge, Mr Jayakumar said.

The animation school in Thiruvananthapuram and the animation academy in Kolkata, run in partnership with the West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation Ltd (Webel), enjoy an almost 100 per cent placement record, he said. Students from these two schools are in great demand in the animation industry, he added.

The Toonz Animation Academy in Thiruvananthapuram can train 300 students a year, while the Toonz Webel Academy in Kolkata can train around 350 students every year.
