Maruti December sales rise 23.7 pc

Automobile major Maruti Udyog Ltd today reported a 23.7 per cent increase in total sales during December 2006 at 56,985 units as against 46,079 units in the same month a year ago.

Domestic sales stood at 54,640 units in December as against 43,251 units in the corresponding month a year ago, up 26.3 per cent, the company said in a statement here.

Sales of its entry-level model Maruti 800 remained flat at 7,289 units in December as against 7,252 units the previous year, up 0.5 per cent. The compact car segment, comprising Alto, Zen, Wagon-R, and Swift continued to be the prime driver at 38,461 units, up by 35.6 per cent.

Sales in the mid-size segment (Baleno and Esteem), however, registered a dip at 2,127 units (2,459), down 13.5 per cent.

The company exported 2,345 units as against 2,828 units in the previous year, down 17.1 per cent.

For the fiscal year 2006-07 till December, the company registered a total cumulative sales of 4,74,812 units (4,07,422), up 16.5 per cent.
