Roadways Money & Banking - General Insurance States - West Bengal Transport operators call off strike Our Bureau
The strike had been called by several private transporters' associations and the Joint Council of Bus Syndicate in protest against a steep hike in transport insurance premium. The strike in West Bengal was called off on Wednesday following a meeting between Mr Subhas Chakraborty, West Bengal's Transport Minister, and the Joint Council of Bus Syndicate. Speaking to newspersons following the meeting, Mr Chakraborty said he had requested the private transporters not to resort to any agitation till an alternative settlement could be found. He said he had promised them that he would look into their demand for a reduction in the rate of the recently-hiked transport insurance premium. All private transport operators in West Bengal, including those under the aegis of the West Bengal Contract Carriage Operators' Association, had said that the proposed hike in transport insurance premium would render their operations unviable.
