CARC also plans to roll out Wi-max trials in Mumbai and Chennai in the next few weeks. "We are awaiting the spectrum policy of the Government since the components used in the CPE is based on the frequency bands. We hope to launch the product by mid-May," said the CARC Chairman, Mr R. Poornalingam. He said that the pricing of the product was yet to be decided and that he was betting on volumes to bring down the cost. The company is in talks with operators to deploy its technology and equipment companies to manufacture its technology solutions. It is now conducting live demos for applications such as high speed Internet, video streaming, large file transfers as well as voice over IP. The Government has set a target of 20 million broadband subscribers by 2010. Wi-max promises to solve the last mile connectivity problems in rural India. CARC, which is a global R&D centre dedicated to broadband wireless access, primarily focuses on Wi-max solutions adapted to local needs. It plans to offer solutions developed here to address challenges in similar developing countries.
