Hyderabad Feb. 13 Sanyo Electric Company, a leading global player in consumer electronics, will unveil the environment-friendly green television sets in the next 12 months in India, before rolling it out in the international market.

The company is also betting big on the slim TV segment, with a line-up of 10 models.

The company's R&D facility at Bangalore has developed a prototype of green TV. "We are hoping to launch this in one year. The energy-efficient TV would consume 20 per cent less power than the conventional TV. It is likely to cost 20-25 per cent more," Mr Katsuyoshi Takahashi, Director of Sanyo BPL Private Ltd, said.

Mr Toshiaki Iue, President of Sanyo TV International Corp, said the company had a share of five per cent in the colour TV segment, which had been pegged at 10 million pieces.

"We are now looking at increasing the share to 7.5 per cent this financial year," he said.

The joint venture was confident of achieving a turnover of Rs 450 crore this year.

Slim TV segment

The company predicted that the evolving segment of slim televisions would ultimately rule the market. Those who wanted to upgrade to LCDs, slim TVs turned out to be a good alternative. They were available at affordable prices (one-third of an LCD version), while giving the slim look.

With a good line-up of slim TVs, the company hoped that it would have a leadership in this segment.

Security cameras

The company also lined up its security camera surveillance systems for several Indian cities. "A city in the eastern part would have the first installation," Mr Toshiaki Iue said.

Retail Sector

Sanyo has entered into a tie-up with a major retail store chain for the supply of its in-house refrigeration needs. The retail chain, which was planning more than thousand stores, had selected the company as one of the suppliers, he said.

At present the company is importing the systems to meet the retail need. "However, if demand grows, we are also ready to manufacture them in India," Mr Iue said.
