Thiruvananthapuram Feb. 23 Over the next few months, Exploreruralindia.org, the Web site of India's rural tourism project, will be revamped and made more interactive.

Informative

The site is now purely information based, explained Mr Sudhir Sahi, National Consultant, Endogenous Tourism Project, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The idea behind the Web site's revamp is to incorporate new information gathered from the 36 locations that are part of the rural tourism project and make the Web site an interactive experience for users, he added. The endogenous tourism project/rural tourism project, supported by the Union Ministry of Tourism and the UNDP, is an initiative to strengthen rural livelihoods through tourism.

The project, which is currently being implemented in 36 villages in 20 States, aims to enable local communities to introduce visitors to their arts and crafts and natural and cultural heritage.

According to Mr Sahi, the project is at various stages of development and operational readiness in each of the 36 locations across the country.

However, by the time the UNDP's role in the project ends by December 2008, all 36 rural tourism sites will be managed and operated by the local community, he pointed out. Community ownership and management is a key aspect of the rural tourism project, he emphasised.

Visitors to the locations covered by the project have expressed satisfaction at having enjoyed experiences of a high order, Mr Sahi said.
