90-server equivalent machine to target mid-sized enterprises

Amby Valley March 9 IBM on Thursday announced an offer on its entry-level mainframe and new services for the Indian market. Participating customers may try the System z mainframe for free for up to six months, and then have an option to purchase the machine at a special price of little less than $2,00,000, said Mr Sreenath Chary, Country Sales Head, Z Series, IBM India.

Speaking at the company's annual Innovizion Summit in Amby Valley in Maharashtra, Mr Chary said this machine was the equivalent of 90 servers and will be targeted at the mid-sized enterprise segment.

The crash in price barriers for mainframes is now being combined with flexible offers on hardware usage (on demand computing) and open sourcing of the software, said Mr Ray Jones, Vice President, Worldwide zSeries Software Sales, IBM.

New services such as integration, porting and tuning of software; security and encryption; Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) practices and installation for high availability Linux clusters will begin from IBM's Bangalore unit.

`India needs mainframes'

``India is a new market and represents a tremendous opportunity. There is a need for mainframes in this market. Mostly medium-sized and small customers are buying a mainframe as their first corporate customer,'' said Mr Jim Stallings, General Manager, System z, IBM Systems and Technology Group.

IBM will continue to focus on mid-sized companies in the financial and ISP domains in India. The firm has sold six Business Class mainframes since its launch in June last year. A lot of work on mainframes is being done by the firm's Indian centres.

India is continually contributing to the Z operating system on which IBM's mainframes run. The firm is working on enriching skills on mainframes in the country by tying up with universities and systems integrators customers to provide certification.

IBM saw a seven per cent growth in revenues last year.
