Telecommunications Industry & Economy - Radio/TV Plea for open sky policy in satellite services Our Bureau
New Delhi March 20 The broadcasting and telecommunications industries have renewed calls for the Government to consider an open sky policy in the satellite services segment that will enable greater choice for consumers. Indian and international industry organisations such as the VSAT Association of India (VSAI), the Global VSAT Forum (GVF) and the regionally-based Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (CASBAA) came together on Monday on a common platform to highlight the satellite capacity crunch due to Government policies.
The policy now
"The current policy of filling the gaps by renting foreign transponders on a short-term basis is not sustainable and will keep India at the mercy of the short-term market fluctuations. Foreign operators will not dedicate capacity to the Indian market if long term contracts are available elsewhere," said CASBAA. It said that the industry is concerned that a spectrum grab for current satellite bandwidth in the 3.4GHz-3.7Ghz range used by Indian and international satellite operators could close down satellite services, including hundreds of TV channels across India.
