Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) is observing 2007-08 as Environmental Conservation Year, says a press release. During the year, CCL has planned to carry out afforestation of 8 lakh saplings. CCL has already planted 26.69 lakhs plants from 1991-92 to 2001-02 at a cost of Rs13.47 crore in an area covering 2791 hectares. During 2002-03 to 2006-07, the company planted 27.6 lakhs saplings on 1,100 hectares at a cost of Rs 6.46 crore. Further, adds the release, measures have been taken to control pollution in the Damodar river, including rain water harvesting schemes. The CMPDI is monitoring the water quality of the Damodar on a quarterly basis and appropriate remedial actions are being taken where necessary, according to the release.
