Airlines Air Asia to operate in India by next year Our Bureau
Mumbai June 13 Malaysian low-cost airline Air Asia plans to start operations in India towards the end of next year. The airline is awaiting clearances from the Indian Government to fly between Malaysia and Kochi, Bangalore, Kolkata and Amritsar at low fares, said Mr Tony Fernandes, Chief Executive Officer of the airline, speaking at the fourth Annual India and Middle East Low Cost Airline Symposium here on Wednesday.
Orders
As part of its global expansion, the airline is looking at reaching out to China, Japan, West Asia, Korea, Europe and Australia. The airline currently has a fleet size of 54 aircraft consisting of 19 Airbus 320s and 35 Boeing 737s, said Mr Fernandes. The airline has also placed firm orders for 150 Airbus 320s, besides an option for another 50 to be delivered if the need arises. Firm orders for 50 Airbus 330s, and an option for 10 more, have also been placed.
Cheaper Fare
Earlier, the Malaysian no-frill international carrier had expressed its intention to fly between India and Malaysia with 70 per cent cheaper fare than the average existing fares on this route.
