Looking for local info? Use mobile ‘Genie’

You could even receive your air tickets on Genie.

Bangalore, June 29 SMS search comes to town with TeliBrahma’s Genie. Download this software to your mobile and you could make a citywide search for petrol pumps, ATMs, concerts etc, for free.

You will not need GPRS (which enables Internet on your mobile) nor will you have to spend on premium SMS. Just four ‘normal’ SMSs and you could search for a new restaurant in another part of town, learn about the coupons/ discounts it currently offers and even book your table – all from your mobile.

“People require more than information - they want contextual, action-oriented results,” said Mr Narasimha Suresh, CEO, TeliBrahma Convergent Communications, a Bangalore-based start-up. The motto is ‘Simple and quick’: search for the nearest hospital, and the results will include the phone number. Click this and a call is placed to the hospital. When you select any option, an SMS is sent automatically to TeliBrahma’s server, which relays the information back to your mobile.

Genie comes with a GPRS option for those who use it. This increases the number of results for a search. The results are also visually appealing, with ads and ticker messages. It allows you to save your previous searches as bookmarks on your mobile. You could even receive your air tickets on Genie. Coupons and tickets are sent as either barcodes or as a unique message that can be validated. People will not use their mobiles for plain vanilla search but for getting deals and for its ease of use. With the mobile, an atypical, time-specific search is now possible, he said.

Genie is being offered as a free download (takes up just 150 KB storage on your mobile) by TeliBrahma from its Web site.

The company has tied up with channels and retail outlets in the city for distributing the application using Bluecasting.

When you enter a store like Mobile Mane, the application is sent to your mobile over Bluetooth.

A majority of Genie’s current users are aged between 20-30 years.

We hope to reach 50,000 active users in 3 months, said Mr Suresh.

The company has tied up with Yellow Pages providers for the information. It will extend the service to Delhi, Ahmedabad and Pune soon.
