Survey predicts 9-fold rise in mobile music purchases

Global sales may touch $45 b by 2009

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore, June 30 Soundbuzz has predicted a nine-fold increase in mobile music purchases (compared to any other format) by Indian consumers by 2009.

A study conducted on the ‘Music sales data’ has revealed that the Indian consumer had purchased more mobile music than physical music between January and March 2007. These purchases, according to Soundbuzz, would continue to rise over the next two years.

Music Sales

The survey has concluded that the Asian music sales would continue to be driven by mobile music, which would comprise 75 per cent of all music purchased by Asian consumers by 2009.

While mature markets such as Australia and the US would see growing online revenues at 1:1 (online: mobile or greater), emerging markets like India would virtually be 100 per cent mobile music-oriented.

The digital music sector, the study pointed out, was being dominated by mobile music — with mobile music accounting for 85 per cent of all digital music sales in the Asia-Pacific — highlighting the difference in digital music consumption habits between the US and Asia-Pacific.

The global music sales are expected to rise to $45 billion by 2009 from about $39 billion in 2006 and digital music is expected to outsell physical music sales by early 2009.

Break-up

Of this, the total music sales in India is expected to rise to $911 million (Rs 4,100 crore) in 2009 from $396 million (Rs 1,782 crore) at present.

The break-up further reveals that mobile music sales volume would rise to $800 million (Rs 3,600 crore) in 2009, while the physical music sales would dip to $111 million (Rs 500 crore) against $168 million (Rs 756 crore) in 2006.
