Railways States - Andhra Pradesh High-speed rail corridor likely for Hyderabad
Our Bureau Hyderabad, July 8 With the GHIAL (GMR Hyderabad International Airport) getting ready for commercial operations early next year, the Andhra Pradesh Government is planning to lay a ‘high-speed’ rail corridor connecting Hyderabad with the coastal town of Machilipatnam. The 365-km rail road would prove to be handy for export and import operators when the new airport becomes operational. “The high-speed rail link will be crucial for speeding up economic activity,” Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, said. “We are going to take this up with the Prime Minister and Planning Commission,” he said in a press release marking his 58th birthday. The travel time between the State capital and port town would be reduced to just two hours from the current 6-7 hours. “This, in turn, would trigger economic growth in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Nalgonda, Mahboobnagar, Medak, Warangal, Guntur and Krishna districts,” he said. “The corridor would be taken up on the lines of the proposed Delhi-Mumbai line. We are preparing a detailed project report,” he said. Stating that the State was entitled to have 50 per cent royalty on the natural resources, he said this would help the Government in continuing the free power scheme to the farmers. Pointing out that the irrigation pump sets and lift irrigation activity needed a total of 16,830 million units, he said this could be met by the resources available in the Krishna-Godavari basin.
