‘Israel keen on free trade pact’

G. Srinivasan

Tel Aviv, Aug. 5 Israel is keen on forging a free trade agreement with India on the back of robust economic relations between the two countries that began in 1992.

This was stated by the Deputy Prime Minister of Israel and Minister of Trade and Labour, Mr Eliyahu Yishai, to the Minister of State for Industry, Mr Ashwani Kumar, when the latter called on him.

Talking to Business Line here, Mr Kumar said that Israel had given a proposal for an FTA with India a month ago and that “we will actively look into it”.

Mr Kumar said that the Israeli Minister sought to involve Israeli companies in infrastructure development in India for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Trade office

Israel is keen on opening a trade office in Bangalore apart from the one in Mumbai to address the growing demand for exporters from both countries.

Mr Kumar said that Israel was also keen on sharing India’s experience in inclusive growth on the upgradation and rationalisation of traditional industries in India as Israel has a large number of unemployed people.

Project reviews

Mr Kumar said that he has designated the Indian Ambassador in Israel, Mr Arun K. Singh, as the focal point for reviewing more than twenty science and technology agreements.
