Internet Variety - Books Now, free downloads of Telugu books!
K.V. Kurmanath Hyderabad, Aug. 17 Telugus living in India and elsewhere can now boast of having their own Project Gutenberg, the global cooperative on the worldwide Web that offers thousands of books for free download. Started by Mr G. Udaykumar, a journalist and publisher of books on consumer rights and environment, www.vikasadhatri.org is aimed at giving free downloads of Telugu books, particularly those which fail to find a market. “We ourselves published books on consumer rights and environment in Telugu and found that there are not many takers for these kind of books. Our effort didn’t work out financially,” he said. It then occurred to them that these works, which were digitally available to them, could be put on a Web site for free downloads without spending much. Slow start
Started off with 20 books two months ago, the site now offers 40 books with writers slowly showing interest in giving books. “We are looking at a database of 100 books by the year-end. This will give us a critical mass to think over a viable revenue model, while offering free downloads,” Mr Udaykumar said.
