Standards & Benchmarks Nokia investigating handset explosion
Our Bureau New Delhi, Aug. 30 Nokia on Thursday said it is working closely with relevant authorities to investigate the explosion of a mobile phone in Kolkata, which reportedly exploded while the battery was being charged, causing some minor injuries to a 24-year-old housewife. The company, however, pointed out that the product advisory issued by it on August 14, 2007, for the Nokia-branded battery manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co Ltd of Japan between December 2005 and November 2006 only covered the BL 5C series and “no other series”. According to reports, the phone in Kolkata was a Nokia 2100 set with BL D3 series battery. “We are investigating the issue, but all I can say at this point is that the handset in question was a Nokia 2100, which we stopped shipping about three years back,” a Nokia spokesperson said. Nokia said that product quality and reliability were top priority for the company and that it took reports regarding the integrity of products extremely seriously. “With the recent product advisory, we believe we have acted proactively and responsibly, based on the knowledge that we have today. Should there be any doubt about the safety of our products, Nokia will take appropriate action,” Nokia said.
