‘Competition cutting BSNL market share’

Our Bureau

Madurai, Oct. 4 The competition in the telecom sector with the advent of private players has brought down the market share of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL).

And the receipt of over 200 applications seeking universal access service licence is bound to make the competition still more fierce, according to BSNL Madurai General Manager, Mr M.K. Sudarsanam.

The market share has come down to 30 per cent, though BSNL continues to make profit, he said while talking to media persons here.

While 60,000 landline customers have been lost in the last few years, BSNL has gained over 21,000 wireless in local loop connections, and 1.6 lakh mobile connections, he said.

He further said that work on the erection of 170 cell towers was on, aimed at providing mobile coverage to villages with a minimum population of 2,000.

BSNL broadband service has been well received and would be launched in another 39 locations soon.
