‘A moment of pride and joy’: Mr Ratan N. Tata, Chairman, Tata Motors, at the roll-out of the company’s one millionth car on Indica platform at the Pune plant on Saturday. Our Bureau Pune, Nov. 24 The millionth car off the Indica platform was rolled out of the Tata Motors facility here on Saturday, nearly nine years after its production was commenced in January 1999. Speaking at a ceremony to mark the milestone, Mr Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Motors, said that the making of India’s first car from scratch had been a long road, but it was very rewarding to reach this point. Mr Tata recalled that many had been sceptical and critical when the company decided to go ahead with the car project. Addressing the workers, he said: “When we planned a car, most thought a truck company cannot make a car, and that we will make a rattle-trap. But we made a car not a rattle-trap, and it has made a mark not only in India but overseas as well.” Quality issuesEmphasising the need to address issues of quality, Mr Tata said, “In humility, we have a long way to go in the world when it comes to scale and class. We need to pay attention to quality, and be more aware that there is still some way to go before we can say that we have cars that are the same or better than other cars in the world.” The plant started with a capacity of with 1,50,000 cars per annum which was ramped up to 2,25,000 in 2006. The Indigo was launched in 2002, the Indigo Marina in 2006 and the Indigo XL in 2007. The 1,00,000th car milestone was achieved in March 2001, while the half-a-million mark was reached in February 2005.
