Visakhapatnam airport development project delayed

Defence Ministry clearance yet to be obtained

The delay in Visakhapatnam is likely to hold-up a similar proposal for the development of Tiruchi airport as the Government planned to invite bids for both airports together.

New Delhi, Dec. 6 Visakhapatnam will have to wait a bit longer to get a world class airport: The proposed city side development of the airport is being delayed as Defence Ministry clearance is yet to be taken.

Official sources told Business Line that clearance from the Ministry of Defence was required for the project as the airport was a civil enclave airport. The airport is a Defence field under the control of the Navy, with Airports Authority of India (AAI) maintaining the civil enclave including the terminal building and civilian operations.

The Government had earlier planned to invite bids by the end of October for not only commercial operations and maintenance of the terminal building but also to develop, manage and operate the cargo facilities and undertake city side development at the airport.

Delay impact

The delay in Visakhapatnam is likely to hold up a similar proposal for the development of Tiruchi airport as the Government planned to invite bids for both airports together.

After all Government clearances are received, AAI would call for Request for Quotation to outsource on a long-term basis the maintenance and commercial exploitation of the new terminal buildings at the airports.

When contacted, a spokesperson of the Ministry of Civil Aviation said that the Government was committed to develop world class airport infrastructure around the country.

The city side development of these two southern airports is part of the Government plan
