Call to improve quality of management education

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Dec. 30 Even as the number of management institutes proliferates, efforts should be made to ensure that new-age managers who graduate from these institutes do not lack the depth of professional management, said Mr Subir Raha, former Chairman and Managing Director of ONGC Ltd and immediate Past President of the All India Management Association.

While addressing a Golden Jubilee programme of the Calcutta Management Association (CMA) here, Mr Raha said it would be necessary to ensure that the quality of education imparted by these institutions was of a very high order.

“Otherwise, we will end up with an increasing number of people with management degrees but with decreasing levels of competence”, he said, adding that “this is certainly not our idea of India in 2020”.

The former ONGC chief said that as the number of management institutes grows, getting the right kind of faculty in adequate numbers would be a problem which would have to be dealt with effectively.

“The remuneration paid to faculty is an issue. You need to pay adequately if you want to have world-class people who will teach management,” he said.

He said that organisations like the Calcutta Management Association should take up programmes on a sustained basis to contain the problem of declining managerial competence in organisations.

Mr Raha said that, unlike management students in the past who were inclined to take up jobs, several of those who have undergone management education today prefer entrepreneurship to salaried jobs.

“This class of entrepreneurs is also creating jobs across the country. As their businesses grow, they need to ensure that they emerge as credible players in trillion-dollar markets,” he said.
