Telecommunications Variety - Radio/TV Use DD’s terrestrial infra for mobile TV services: TRAI Our Bureau New Delhi, Jan. 23 Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has suggested that the terrestrial infrastructure of Doordarshan should be shared with private operators for offering Mobile TV services. Issuing the final recommendations on mobile television service to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, TRAI said: “For better utilisation of spectrum, TRAI has suggested sharing of terrestrial transmission infrastructure of Doordarshan on mutual agreement basis in a non-discriminatory manner. Similarly, the mobile TV operators will also be obliged to offer their infrastructure for sharing.” As per the final recommendations, licences for Mobile TV services will be auctioned by the Government. Each successful bidder will get a chunk of 8 Mhz spectrum as part of the licence. Existing telecom operators can provide mobile TV without taking a new licence. However, if they want separate spectrum for the service, they will have to participate in the bidding process. TRAI has also suggested that terrestrial TV should also be allowed to private operators to enable Mobile TV services. The choice of broadcasting technology has been left to the service provider. TRAI has ruled out satellite-based mobile TV services for now. More Stories on : Telecommunications | Radio/TV
