The tale of two cos in India

Chennai, Feb 1 Microsoft started off its India operations in 1990 and employs over 5,000 people across its six business units. Microsoft India Development Centre, born in 1998 in Hyderabad, contributes to product development. The centre has filed over 180 patents in the last 3 years.

Microsoft Global Services India, also in Hyderabad, designs solutions based on Microsoft technologies. Microsoft IT India helps develop business applications meant for internal use.

The sales and services subsidiary has 7 offices across the country to market Microsoft products. The global technical support centre in Bangalore provides support to English-speaking global customers.

Microsoft Research India works with academia, the government and industry to further computer science research in the country.

The entertainment and devices division supports the company’s software services in digital entertainment.

MSN India offers e-mail services and online content across news, lifestyle and sports and sites such as travel and entertainment. MSN India was born in September 2000 and now has over 12.5 million unique users.

Yahoo! India was set up in 2000.

Yahoo’s R&D centre develops technologies and product platforms for Yahoo! Inc.

The Product Engineering Group builds platforms and applications for software systems.

The Technology Research Group builds technologies that improve or change user behaviour. Large parts of its e-mail and instant messaging software are built in India. The India centre also mines the data Yahoo! generates globally.

The Global Solutions Delivery group’s activities are two-pronged: Engineering Services and Application and Infrastructure services to Yahoo! Inc. (Research engineers here work with the company’s scientists to build up experiments, demonstrations and proofs of concept); and Business Services providing content management, collation, editing and categorisation.

Yahoo! India has over 1,000 people.

The India portal of Yahoo! offers search, mail and chat services, commercial services such as shopping, auctions, finance, and travel, as well as content services.
