Persistent develops mobile application tool

R. Savitha

Pune, Feb. 10 With billions of mobile users worldwide and around 200 million of them in India alone, mobile application development in the domestic market has got a boost. Research has shown that the US mobile applications market would reach $9 billion by 2011 (IDC: 23 per cent annual growth), mobile gaming revenues $9.6 billion by 2011 (Gartner Research) and mobile gaming market $10 billion by 2009 (November 2007, Juniper Research).

Mobile gaming users in India would increase four-fold from 10 million in 2007 to 40 million in 2009. (Juniper Research).

Talking to Business Line, Dr R. Venkateswaran, Chief Technical Officer (Telecom), Persistent Systems, said that mobile handsets were becoming more capable each year — in terms of processing capability, screen-size and memory.

He said that Persistent Systems, an outsourced product development company, has developed the HanDil applicationfor mobile handsets. This facilitates development of applications that are largely device independent and support several international languages, while leveraging device capabilities related to form-factor, screen-size, memory and battery power. It has developed the Device Abstraction Layer (DAL) that abstracts the device-specific components. Dr Venkateswaran said benefits of the HanDIL application methodology include quick turnaround and faster time-to-market.

Asked about the current market for the application, he said that mobile applications are as large as the number of mobile phone users.
