Hardware Info-Tech - Hardware Intel details applications for embedded systems

Rishi Kumar San Jose (California), April 16 Intel Corporation on Wednesday demonstrated applications of its next generation processors and platforms for embedded systems along with some of its partners while announcing a seven-year life cycle support for these applications built on 45 nanometer Intel Core 2 Duo Processors. The General Manager of Intel Corporation for the Embedded Computing Division, Mr Joe Jensen, detailed how these technologies are set to impact consumers directly through smaller handheld devices and their usage in sectors such as retail, medical and healthcare, automotives and even in servers. Speaking at the Embedded Systems Conference being held in the Silicon Valley, Mr Jensen, an Intel veteran, explained how even the security in some cases is being now embedded and built into new systems, thereby bringing about convergence in areas of servers and some communication applications. R&D investmentOn a trip sponsored by Intel to demonstrate some of the applications of its new generation processors, Mr Jensen, in the presence of some of the company vendor partners, said that Intel invests over $5 billion in R&D every year, aimed at improving convenience and productivity. For enhanced multi-media experience, Intel developers have come up with new algorithms that complement the company’s 45 nanometer processor that comes with Super Shuffle Engine that enhances streaming experience for graphics and multimedia processing. This is aimed at simplifying developers’ design work. On show were several products including an innovative Tablet PC developed on Intel Atom processor by one of its partners, a ruggedised PC design for different consumer applications, and onboard car entertainment applications. For instance, the MTC 2100 is a 8.4-inch Tablet PC with Intel Silverthorne processor, which is projected as a rugged versatile PC. Apart from 4-8 hours of battery life, this has been designed to meet requirements in logistics, retail and other areas where people use them in different environments. Alongside was another PC, immersed in a water container to demonstrate its rugged structure developed with Intel partners. This low cost shell is aimed at designing PCs which are used in military and defence applications, surveillance systems, and in oil an gas exploration industry. Low-power processorsReferring to the applications of lower power consumption processors and its applications in the automotive industry, Mr Jensen said that about 60 million cars are set to come out by 2014 with inbuilt screen and display facilities. These display systems would be very versatile with capabilities to handle 3D, all media formats without the hassle of upgradation. The retail vertical has host of usages of Intel processors, be it in signages, point-of-sale systems, terminals and smaller handheld devices. The larger display panels are set to get cheaper, empowering retailers also to handle advertising tasks on the same screen. One of the Intel partners demonstrated an all-in-one, point-of-sale display system, which capabilities similar to a notebook PC. More Stories on : Hardware | Hardware
