Research & Development IBM in pact with ISB for research in services sector Our Bureau Hyderabad, May 12 IBM India and the Indian School of Business (ISB) on Monday announced the first open collaborative research agreement in Asia with focus on improving competitiveness of the services sector in the region. This association spans collaborative research and supports companies to redesign their project management structure, improve efficiencies, and harness the power of technology, in improving supply chains. The Executive Director of Centre for Global Logistics and Manufacturing Strategies (GLAMS), at ISB, Prof N. Viswanadham, said that more than 50 per cent of the country’s economy comes from the services sector and improvements in its delivery will have a big impact on the services sector. Describing the association with ISB as strategic, the Director of IBM India Research Laboratory, Dr Gurudath Banavar, said “at IBM, we define innovation as the intersection of invention and insight. Today, innovation is a dual-value proposition, a balanced foundation of open and proprietary collaborations.” Addressing a press conference here at ISB, its Dean, Mr M. Ram Mohan Rao, said the open collaborative research will help accessing information to understand how some of the projects have been successful and what drives their growth and how best to improve performance. Maruti caseCiting the case of logistics in the automotive sector as in the case of Maruti when it transports its cars from its manufacturing base in North to all parts of the country, Prof Viswanaham said this involves huge costs. A study of patterns would help further streamline and bring down costs. Likewise, they expect to work on transportation of two-wheelers from manufacturing plants to dealers. IBM works with Carnegie Mellon University and University of California for research in developed economies. And this centre will focus on research for India and markets in the region.
