Nuclear deal ‘down to the last days’

Chennai, May 19 The Indo-US nuclear deal is “down to the last days”, says Mr David Mulford, the US Ambassador in India.

Mr Mulford said today that if the Indian side does not come up with a decision to go ahead with the deal at least by June, the US Congress will not have time to take the deal to fruition.

He said that the US had indicated to India that it needed to have the Indian decision fairly early this year to give the US Congress to conclude the deal. “As time has gone on, it is clear that we can no longer meet the time table,” he said. “Practically speaking, there is a narrow window,” the Ambassador said.

Later, answering a question, he said that India could buy uranium from countries that do not belong to the Nuclear Suppliers Group — such as Niger and Angola — but noted that such a step would evoke strong reaction from the US Congress.
