Future Group offers self-publishing initiative

K V Kurmanath

Hyderabad, May 20 If you are a writer and wondering how to go about publishing your work, Future Group, the retail major, says it has an answer.

“You can suggest the design and order for whatever number of copies for publication. A Pune woman, who wrote a book on cookery, would have her work published at Depot this month. She, otherwise, couldn’t have imagined seeing her book on the shelves of book stores,” Ms Preeti Vyas, Business Head of Depot, the Future Group’s book, music and stationery retail arm, told Business Line. “Writers, most of the times, are clueless as to what to do about their works. Our self-publishing initiative would allow them to publish as low as 25 copies. What’s more, we will launch the book and sell them at our stores across the country for a few weeks and, then, return the unsold copies,” she said.

Ms Vyas was here on Saturday in connection with the launch of Mr Chetan Bhagat’s new novel ‘The 3 Mistakes of My Life’.

The first such book of Mr Dave Anand’s ‘People’s Super Highway’, was released and the second book on cookery was on the anvil. “There are about 40 projects under our consideration for publication,” she said.

The two-year-old Depot has a network of 107 outlets. Of these 11were stand alone, while the rest of them were in shop-in-shops in Future group’s malls. “In tune with the Big Bazaar strategy of reaching out to the middleclass, the Depot offerings too target the same class of consumers. We don’t sell what is premium,” she said.

The format, which registered a turnover of Rs 50 crore last year, was looking at doubling the sales as it headed for expanding the outlet network to 200 in the next one year.

The company was also looking at expanding the private label books in the areas like children’s literature and cookery.
