Hardware States - Kerala Kerala plans electronics hubs Move meant to get funds for the hardware sector. State has identified land for the purpose in Kochi. Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, July 14 As part of its efforts to attract investments in the hardware sector, the Kerala Government is planning to establish electronics hubs in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. The Industries Minister, Mr Elamaram Kareem, said in the State Assembly on Monday that a committee appointed by the Government had recommended creation of basic infrastructure and formulation of a special package of incentives to promote electronics industries in the State. The Government had already identified the land for the proposed electronics hub in Kochi, he said in reply to questions. Project tie-upsMr Kareem said that a Singapore business delegation that visited the State recently had suggested that the State and Singapore could work together in the fields of life science park, free trade and warehousing zone, food processing and biotechnology. The Minister informed the House that the application had been submitted for registration facilities for importing sulphur from Kuwait Petroleum Company for the State-owned Travancore Titanium Products Ltd in Thiruvananthapuram. A freight station would be set up in Kannur with the assistance of the Central Warehousing Corporation, he said. Vizhinjam terminalThe Minister for Ports, Mr M. Vijayakumar, said that the Government had no plans to acquire land for the proposed international container transhipment terminal at Vizhinjam. He said that the land for the terminal would be reclaimed from the sea. However, land would be acquired for road and rail connectivity, the reports on which are under preparation. RITES (Rail India Techinical and Economic Services), a subsidiary of the Railways, is carrying out the feasibility study for establishing the rail connectivity. Mr Vijayakumar, who is also in charge of Railways in the State, said that building of bogie frames for railway coaches and side-end walls of wagons would be taken up in the proposed coach component factory at Cherthala. In the first phase, the assets and the entire staff of the Steel Fabrication Unit of the State-owned Steel Industries Kerala Ltd (SILK) will be shifted to the proposed new company. In the second phase, the assets and staff of Autokast Ltd, a subsidiary of SILK, will be transferred to the new company in stages. The joint working group comprising officials of the State Government and the Railways would prepare the business plan for the venture, the Minister said.
