Fresh ‘low’ to bring more rain into peninsula

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 3 The first of the two ‘made-to-order’ monsoon systems slotted for this week has materialised over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday with signature features that promise more rain for the still deficit-ridden peninsula.

For the second consecutive time during the ongoing revival phase, a ‘low’ will steer a belt of enhanced rain into the west-northwest to empty contents over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Vidarbha, Marathwada, madhya Maharashtra and north interior Karnataka.

An India Meteorological Department (IMD) update said on Sunday that fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is likely over south Orissa through Monday and over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana during the next three days.

VIGOROUS MONSOON

The last 24 hours ending Sunday have already seen vigorous monsoon conditions prevailing over Telangana, while they were active over coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Rainfall occurred at many places over Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and at a few places over Rayalaseema, while it was isolated over Kerala.

But forecast until Tuesday said rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places over Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh and at a few places over Rayalaseema and Lakshadweep.

Isolated rain or thundershowers are likely to occur over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

In the Maharashtra-Gujarat region, rainfall occurred at most places over Konkan-Goa and south madhya Maharashtra, at a few places over north madhya Maharashtra, while it was isolated over Marathwada.

Forecasts said rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places over Konkan-Goa, south madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat State, and at a few places over north madhya Maharashtra and Marathawada.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places over Gujarat during the next 24 hours.

Heavy rainfall has been also forecast at isolated places over Konkan-Goa and south madhya Maharashtra during the same period.

On Sunday, the monsoon trough passed through Bikaner, Jodhpur, Jhansi, Pendra, the centre of the ‘low’ and then southeastward into the east-central Bay. An offshore trough extended from the Maharashtra coast to Kerala coast, which is likely to cause fairly widespread rainfall activity along the west coast.

SECOND SYSTEM

Meanwhile, the outlook for a second and a stronger ‘low’ is still on, with August 9 (Saturday next) projected to be the likely date for genesis.

Unlike in the instant case, this system is tipped to drag the monsoon current over a much larger swathe in the peninsula, including the southern parts.

The causative trough that would extend from the Arabian Sea into the Bay and further into the South China Sea is expected to host a tropical cyclone, but latest indications are the equatorial Pacific could be the area to be watched out for.

This system may not last long, with forecasts suggesting convergence of flows into the Bay of Bengal to ratchet up the ‘low’ there.

This is projected to undergo at least one round of intensification as per initial conditions obtaining on Sunday.
