Natco launches nanotech drug for breast cancer

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Sept 19 Natco Pharma Ltd has launched its first nanotechnology drug, Albupax, for breast cancer treatment.

It is the first generic version of the international brand Abraxane of Abraxis Biosciences, USA. Albupax contains Paclitaxel in an albumin bound nano-particle form.

“It replaces the conventional Paclitaxel and has the advantage of having least side-effects. In the conventional Paclitaxel, the solvent polyethylated castor oil is used which causes severe side-effects such as neutropenia, hypersensitivity reactions and neuropathy. Albupax does not contain this solvent and, hence, can be given in optimum doses for enhanced efficacy,” the Hyderabad-based company said in a release.

indigenously developed

The drug has been indigenously developed by Natco in India and is the first albumin-bound Paclitaxel in nano-particle form to be developed in the country, the release said. A 100 mg vial of Albupax would cost Rs 11,500. The estimated Indian market for this product is about Rs 150 crore. Globally, it had $375 million sales in 2007.

“Natco believes that Albupax has the potential to become the single largest brand amongst its basket of oncology products. We are also exploring the possibility of a tie-up for taking this brand to international markets,” Natco added.

The incidence of breast cancer is increasing in India, with nearly a lakh new patients added each year. By 2015, this is likely to increase to two lakh new cases every year, according to industry estimates.
