India to take up pipeline issue with Turkish PM

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Nov. 14 Turkey-Israel-India pipeline proposal would figure during the Turkish Prime Minister, Mr Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s talks with the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, in Delhi next week.

This was indicated by Turkey’s Ambassador to India, Mr Levent Bilman, here on Friday.

Speaking on India and Turkey: Past and Emerging Relations at Observer Research Foundation, he said that economic cooperation and energy security, besides combating terrorism, are likely to dominate the forthcoming India-Turkey talks.

The Ambassador while stressing the importance of the Turkey-Israel-India pipeline said that it would help India achieve energy security as there are apprehensions on the security of the other proposed Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline. He, however, said that Turkey welcomes that pipeline also if it is possible.

Senior Indian officials had met Turkish and Israeli counterparts in Ankara last month to work out the technical details of an offshore pipeline project to bring Central Asian and Russian oil to India.

The Ambassador said Turkey is interested in a Free Trade Agreement with India to improve the bilateral trade relations.

Noting that still there are lots of restrictions in India, he wished that India too liberalise its economy as Turkey.
