Our Bureau

Mumbai, Dec. 1 Mr R.R. Patil, Deputy Chief Minster and Home Minster of Maharashtra, resigned on Monday.

The Governor of Maharashtra has accepted his resignation.

The resignation comes in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, which killed more than 180 people and injured 290.

Mr Patil is the second political causality following the deadly terrorist attack on two business hotels and other locations in the city.

The Union Home Minister, Mr Shivraj Patil, quit on Sunday.

The Chief Minister, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, has also offered to step down owning moral responsibility to the terrorist attack.

At a press conference on Monday, Mr Deshmukh said that he had “offered” his resignation to the Congress High Command. “The High Command has deliberated on the issue but I have not received any further communication,” Mr Deshmukh said.

Over the weekend, political circles were buzzing with news of resignations of both the Deputy Chief Minister and the Chief Minster. Both the ministers had come under severe criticism from the opposition parties including the Shiv Sena and BJP, who have been demanding their resignation for their failure to take preventive steps against the terrorist attack.

Mr Patil was also criticised for his reported remark that in big cities like Mumbai, terror attacks keep happening.

In the past too, Mr Patil had come under criticism for deploying the police force to enforce ban on dance bars in the State and not paying enough attention to serious issue of terrorism.

Mr Patil is the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party in the legislature. He represents Tasgaon taluka in the Sangli district Maharashtra.

In November 2004, he was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister.
