Human Resources States - Tamil Nadu TN needs development of skilled manpower: Minister
Mr Thangam Thennarasu, Minister for School Education, presenting Madurai IT Park land allotment documents to an IT company official at the CII meet held in Madurai on Saturday. — Our Correspondent Madurai, Dec. 7 Information technology companies HCL, Sathyam, Tessolve, Sutherland and Honeywell received the land delivery certificates from Mr Thangam Thennarasu, State Minister for School Education, to establish their facilities at the proposed IT Parks at Vadapalanzhi and Illanthaikulam. The certificates were presented at the concluding session of ‘SPEED 2008’ conference, organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Madurai Zone, here on Saturday. He also handed over the work contract for the creation of infrastructure facilities at the IT Park promoted by ELCOT. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said though Tamil Nadu was well served in school education, there was a need for technically skilled manpower as the IT companies spread to tier I and tier II cities. Knowledge of computer and English offered good scope for employment, even for school dropouts. Students are the largest stakeholders in the development process but there has been no connectivity between education and industry. A relationship with industry in the form of training to fulfil their needs is required and private initiative to impart skill development starting from schools has already been initiated, he said. Dr Santosh Babu, Managing Director, ELCOT, made a presentation on the role of the organisation as a facilitator and Mr P. Hariraj, Chief Engineer, Department of Highways and Minor Ports, made a presentation on the ongoing projects in the State. Mr R. Dinesh, Co Chairman, SPEED 2008, speaking on the way forward, said actionable plans with specific goals would be pursued. Since the first edition of SPEED, held in 2006, international air connectivity to Madurai has been a priority. A compact disc highlighting the advantages and potential of the southern districts has been brought out, so also reports on how other countries approached ‘area development’. Efforts to get big ticket investments to the region, a permanent tourism show every year, pursuit of skill development programme, forging industry-institution partnership by signing MoUs with colleges would be taken forward, he said. The presence of industry captains at the conference – Mr R. Seshasayee, Managing Director, Ashok Leyland, and Mr Venu Srinivasan, Chairman and Managing Director, TVS Motor Company Ltd – should help transform the south into an auto hub in due course, he added.
