PC, laptop prices may see a slide

New Delhi, Dec. 8 Desktop computers and laptops are set to become marginally cheaper with PC maker HCL Infosystems saying it plans to cut product prices by 2-4 per cent, while Mumbai-based Zenith has indicated a price reduction of about one per cent.

“There will be a reduction in prices to the extent of 2-4 per cent depending on the configuration and it will offset, to some extent, the price hikes necessitated in November due to rupee depreciation,” Mr George Paul, Executive Vice-President, HCL Infosystems, said.

At present, the price tag on PCs with standard configuration can range between Rs 20,000-40,000, whereas for laptops it can vary from Rs 25,000-40,000.

“We will bring down the prices of desktops and notebooks by about one per cent, in January,” Mr Raj Saraf, Chairman of Zenith Computers, said.

When contacted, Mr R. Manikandan, Business Group Head, Monitors and Optical Storage Devices (OSDs), LG, said the company would reduce the prices of monitors by an average one per cent. “We will be passing the full benefit of the cut to our consumers,” he said.

The apex hardware association, Manufacturers Association for Information Technology, said the 4 per centage point across-the-board reduction in Cenvat rate will help bring down the prices of IT products. “With this, desktops and notebooks will attract 8 per cent excise duty while all other hardware equipment would attract 10 per cent,” the association said.

MAIT further said along with drop in excise duty for IT hardware, it is essential that the Government rationalises the duty on software which currently attracts 12 per cent service tax, failing which there would be Cenvat overflow in the case of local computer manufacturing.
