Security ‘Indian cos do better on security’
Wider awareness: Dr Amit Mitra (left), Secretary General, FICCI, and Mr Sivarama Krishnan, Executive Director, PricewaterhouseCoopers Pvt Ltd, at a press conference in the Capital on Thursday. — Our Bureau New Delhi, Dec. 18 In a clear indication that security in Indian organisations has evolved rapidly, Indian organisations have fared better than global counterparts in information system security, according to a latest survey. Against the earlier scenario where there were significant gaps in the implementation of ‘people’ related controls, organisations today have identified enhancement of security awareness as a top strategic priority. Over 80 per cent of the organisations polled focused on employee awareness programmes, as compared with 47 per cent, as per global figures. These were the finding of Information Systems Security Survey 2007-08 conducted by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), FICCI and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). “Monitoring of employee use of the Internet and information use is the latest trend, with more than 78 per cent of the organisations focusing on this, as compared with the global figure of 48 per cent. India Inc is also increasingly hiring specialised security staff. Nearly 51 per cent of the organisations in India, as against 32 per cent globally, have employed Chief Information Security Officers,” it said. The study revealed that Indian organisations were no longer looking at security as merely a line item in the overheads budget, nor as a technical issue easily addressed by an off-the-shelf technology product. data backupThe study, which saw the participation of 140 organisations from a broad range of industries, also found that in terms of employing technology safeguards, 91 per cent of respondents indicated having data backup mechanisms in place. “It is encouraging to see that Indian organisations have moved faster than their global counterparts in establishing processes for conducting periodic security audits and in having information security strategy in place. We expect this to continue as majority of the organisations have plans to increase their security spending by double digits,” says Mr Sivarama Krishnan, Executive Director in the information security practice of PwC.
