Politics Agri-Biz & Commodities - Fertilisers Govt to review NDA's urea distribution policy: Paswan Our Bureau
New Delhi , July 14 THE new United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government headed by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, would review the urea distribution policy of the previous National Democratic Alliance Government. This was stated by the Minister for Fertiliser, Chemicals and Steel, Mr Ram Vilas Paswan, here on Wednesday. The Minister said that under the previous policy, 50 per cent of the urea was distributed through the open market while the remaining 50 per cent was distributed under Government control. From April 1, 2004, entire 100 per cent urea distribution was supposed to be through the open market. However, in view of the Lok Sabha elections and protests from some States, the decision was deferred, he said. The Minister said that distribution of 100 per cent of urea through the open market is neither in the interest of the country, nor the industry. He said that till the review is done and a decision is reached by the new Government, the existing practice of 50 per cent controlled distribution would continue.
