Bio-tech & Genetics Agri-Biz & Commodities - Cotton Marketing - Regulatory Bodies & Rulings States - Andhra Pradesh AP hails MRTPC order on Mahyco-Monsanto Our Bureau
Hyderabad , May 12 The Andhra Pradesh Government termed the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission's (MRTPC) interim order on trait value being charged by Mahyco-Monsanto as the victory of cotton farmers. Reacting to the Commission's interim order on Thursday, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said the State had moved the Commission early this year after the company failed to respond to its plea on reducing the trait value. "The decision will help farmers as they can get access to Bt cotton seed at an affordable price, just a little above the non-Bt cotton seed," the Chief Minister said here in a press release. Earlier, addressing a press conference, Ms Poonam Malakondaiah, Commissioner for Agriculture, said the State was neither against any company nor its right on intellectual property. "But it (trait value) should be rational," she said, citing the low royalty the company charged in China (Rs 45) and the US (Rs 108) as against Rs 900 in India. She felt the decision would set in motion a process to regulate prices to make them affordable, particularly for small and medium farmers. On the criticism that Bt had failed in several parts, she clarified that the Government was not against technology. The issue was its pricing.
