ONGC bagged the first prize in the Maharatna category and Chennai Petroleum in the Miniratna category for encouraging women in their respective organisations.

Giving away the WIPS (Women in Public Sector) awards, under the aegis of SCOPE, Panabaaka Lakshmi, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, commended public sector organisations for bringing about institutional changes that had widened opportunities for women in the corporate sector.

Reena Ramachandran, founder President, WIPS, lamented the lack of quality data on working women in the annual survey of enterprises. She also appealed to public sector managements not to link women’s development with Corporate Social Responsibility. Women’s participation is much more than CSR, she added.

Among the other PSU companies that were awarded for encouraging women employees were South Eastern Coalfield, Bharat Coking Coal, Eastern Coalfield, BHEL, Neyveli Lignite and Indian Oil.

The best public sector woman employee award was given to Ruma Barua, a technical officer with Indian Oil, Ranchi, for her work in Naxal-hit areas.
