Rains have scaled up over the North-East and adjoining East India since yesterday, after the monsoon trough moved closer in, the India Met Department (IMD) has said.

The eastern end of the rain-driving trough extends across the north-eastern states. A North-South trough from East Bihar to West-Central Bay of Bengal is adding to the intensity of the rainfall.

RAINS FOR NORTH-EAST

The trough combo is attracting strong southerly/south-westerly winds carrying moisture from the Bay, which is pumped up across the heights of the Himalayas, to be dumped as heavy rainfall. These conditions are expected to prevail over the north-eastern states during the next four days, the IMD said.

Rains are forecast at most places over the hills of Bengal and Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya during the next three days, with the possibility of a reduction in intensity thereafter.

Rainfall is also likely at most places over the eastern parts of Bihar, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during the next two days days, and is expected to decrease thereafter.

Elsewhere, a cyclonic circulation has popped up over the South-East and the adjoining East-Central Arabian Sea, off the Karnataka coast. A US agency forecast had alluded to this churn developing in the Arabian Sea.

Another trough ran down from north interior Karnataka to the Comorin area across South interior Karnataka and interior Tamil Nadu. A cyclonic circulation lies over North Tamil Nadu.

WEAKENED MONSOON

These troughs have formed over a geography where the South-West monsoon has weakened after entering its final phase into September. But it is exactly against this background that super typhoon Mangkhut from the West Pacific, preceded by a tropical depression, promises to send in a fresh rain wave next week.

The depression has already left Taiwan and is heading towards Hanoi in Vietnam, while super typhoon Mangkhut is following not too far behind. A 'pulse' from the combo is expected to reach the Bay of Bengal and grow in strength, to become a depression. It may head west-south-westward towards coastal Andhra Pradesh, according to the US forecast.

The East Coast, including Tamil Nadu and the interior peninsula, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and adjoining interior, may receive rain from the would-be depression, according to a 10-day outlook from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
