The Toyota Innova Crysta has been clocking a steady rise in sales since it launch earlier this year. From a halving of sales numbers in the first five months of the year to a near doubling since the arrival of the new model, the Innova continues to prove that it is still the preferred peoples mover amongst Indian buyers.

But it is undeniable that Toyota is missing a big chunk of sales to the diesel ban in the Delhi/ NCR (National Capital Region) market. That is the biggest market in India and the inability to sell the Innova diesel, which has been the most preferred variant of the MPV is a big handicap.

So, earlier this week, Toyota Kirloskar Motor launched the Innova Crysta’s petrol variant. The company says that it is the only vehicle in its segment to have a petrol variant. The new petrol engine is the 2.7-litre Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence) unit. The new variant is available in both a 6-speed automatic and 5-speed manual transmission versions, with the engine tuned to deliver a peak power output of 166 PS and a torque of 245 Nm.

The new Innova Crysta, which was launched earlier this year only with a diesel engine, has been comprehensively redesigned both outside and in the cabin. The exterior gets sharper lines, deeper creases and body panels that exude a more SUV like style especially at the front. The rear hasn’t been experimented with as and the big change is the new tail-lamp combination.

Plusher interior

The cabin gets big changes, much of which are found in the new petrol variant too. The interior is now plusher and there is a wider choice of premium feel materials including lacquered wood. The layout is new and there is an overall improvement in the perceived quality of the cabin. The focus on practicality and usability has been taken a step forward with more storage and comfort features. Innova’s long-standing focus on passenger comfort and maintaining a quiet, refined travel space inside continues too.

The new 2.7-litre petrol engine can be driven in Eco and Power modes and the ARAI rated fuel efficiency is claimed to be 10.83kmpl for the automatic variant and 9.89kmpl for the manual transmission variant. The new petrol variant is available in two grades each for the auto and manual transmission versions, with either a 7-seater or 8-seater configuration for the Gx trim variant.

Safety features which are standard across all variants include three Airbags, Antilock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), height adjustable Seatbelt with Pre Tensioner and Force Limiter (PT/FL) for front seat, three-point seatbelt for all occupants and Child restraint system (ISOFIX) and impact sensing door unlock with secondary battery

The new petrol variants have been priced in the range of ₹13.73 lakh and ₹19.62 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi).
