PSA Peugeot Citroen and the French Education Ministry have renewed their partnership to train young people for industry jobs.

Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, France’s Minister of Education, Higher Education and Research, and Xavier Chéreau, PSA’s Executive VP, Human Resources, reaffirmed this commitment at a signing ceremony last week.

According to a PSA press release, youth employment is a core issue in France and a key concern for the French carmaker. This partnership, initiated 15 years ago, is designed to train young people for professions required by the automotive industry.

To fulfil this mission, PSA leverages the expertise of France’s professional training system. Under the multiyear framework agreement, the group works with professional training schools specialised in a range of areas. These would apply to its plants and development centres, or to its Peugeot, Citroën and DS brands and their networks.

The group currently cooperates on sharing its professional expertise with 50 schools in France. However, the most ambitious objective of this agreement is to make it easier for young people to enter the workforce and the automotive industry in general.

At present, 650 young people are enrolled in a two-year programme as part of this partnership. Nearly 3,500 have been recruited in the PSA network over the past decade, adds the release.

Commenting on the agreement, PSA’s Xavier Chéreau said: “For me, facilitating entry into the workforce is a key part of our HR strategy.

The group’s operations are organised into 20 job families and 110 professions, offering a wide range of opportunities.”

Back home in India, the situation is the same except that the biggest challenge has been getting the right skills for the auto sector. The advantage of youth power is constantly touted as a key strength but getting talented people, especially on the shopfloor, is seldom easy.

There have been reports of a shortage of welders, for instance, in some parts of the country and issues like these need sorting out quickly.
