Flying high
It was in the 1940s that Walchand Hirachand paved the way for the aviation industry in India by starting the Hindustan Aircraft factory in Bangalore. During the Second World War, it served as a base for repairs and servicing of American aircraft in Asia, employing many Indians. The Indians, who had to learn from the basics of aviation engineering, later, went on to build aircraft such as the Consolidated Vultee, Harlow and so on, based on American designs.

Consumer Notes

How well can you read the labels?
At a workshop on `Trade and Ethical Concerns' at the recently held CI Congress 2000 at Durban, South Africa, it was pointed out that the information given on the food-product labels was generally vague.

Corporate

To do or not to...
I often hear people say that their lives have been limited by too few opportunities. That's a very surprising statement. The world is such a dynamic place today that too many opportunities seem to cause more problems than too few. Active people will cons tantly find doors to different areas opening, offers being made, temptations being dangled. The difficulty, usually, lies in learning to say `no' to many of the offers/opportunities that come your way. If you're one of those who feels limited by a lack o f opportunity, you may have to take a closer look at what you're doing.

Corporate kiddy party
Swedish hi-tech engineering major, Sandvik AB's Pune-based Indian subsidiary, Sandvik Asia, celebrated its fortieth anniversary last week with the customary Swede bonhomie.

Goodwill comes in colourful packages
The season of good tidings, great cheer and generous gifts is near. With Diwali having just sparkled by, the festive season spills into the merry excitement of Christmas and the New Year. After a year of hard work, pressures, profits and pitfalls, this i s the best time to develop, strengthen and carry forward strong business relationships.

Environment
A friendly eco-drive
Being a sunny southern capital, Chennai has always taken an innate pride in her beaches. For decades, the three coastal stretches, the Marina, the Elliots beach and the East Coast were its pride. And yet, the city's urbanisation has taken its toll on the m. Besides pollution, the beaches have fallen victim to problems of more serious dimensions such as land grabs and encroachments.

The ebb and flow of green passions
After Independence, when the 600-odd kingdoms were unified and States carved out, language was the rationale for delimitation. The three new States -- Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttaranchal -- do not owe their births to language. Ecological and developm ental factors are their raison d'etre.

Miscellaneous

It is DD's turn now
Poor Anupam Kher! After making such a big deal about what a challenging assignment Sawaal Dus Crore Ka would be and how honoured he was to have been selected to anchor it, he was unceremoniously sacked for no fault of his.

SSI

Mash paper, make dolls
The process is simple, but the finesse comes from the fingertips. It is nothing more than a pliable dough of finely-ground paper scrap, limestone, glue and copper sulphate. This is applied on to a mould made of plaster of Paris, which is then dried and p ainted. But the product that the process yields is very beautiful.

Travel & Places

Singapore's safari night
It was a jungle out there at the Night Safari. Well, almost...

Glory of Varanasi
Miles of stepped ghats, a holy dip in the Ganges, religious ceremonies, numerous temples and mosques, pilgrims and tourists from India and abroad -- all these and more make up the eternal city of Varanasi.

Padova's ageless charm
I've always wondered how it would feel to study in an ancient university. One that hasn't changed for centuries. Last fall, I got a feel of the experience when I was in the 12th-century northern Italian town of Padova.
